Project Log: Day 220 – Draft memory delivered

Just a note here, to mark the day:

Yesterday afternoon I sent to my tutor my 51 pages report.

Better results

The last changes, as mentioned, made a World of difference. The “product”, my program, is reaching recommendations a bit faster. Moreover reviewing things, I rediscovered independently this week that disassortative networks are better candidates for my code to provide recommendations. I had already found (also independently) that centrality measures were important.

No one would believe I discovered these things from running my program and THEN I found out that there are other works out there that comment on these results already, and theory backing up my findings. Well it’s the truth, and I am doubly proud of these things:

  • I learn from actual experiments I developed on my own, which I think will help me never forget.
  • finding that others reached the same conclusions validate the quality of my simulator.

On the other hand, you could argue that if I had studied further/better the topic, I should have found the literature about said conclusions. That’s about right too. But how should I have known to look for such things before I tried my hand at the problem?

Anyhow, I’m happy about it.

Shorter is harder

Past versions of the “memory” discussed many issues with the former implementation of the Genetic Algorithm instead of focusing on the results.

I also included some clutter, too many examples with no real added value, almost “padding”.

Long texts that could be replaced by shorter/clearer tables.

A new version of my dedicated Dashboard with better visuals allowed me to generate the visualizations to support my explanations (and I hope it will serve me well during the defense of my project in front of the Jury).

And so on.

I feel my 51 pages are MUCH better than the former 86 pages version.

I hope my tutor will find it acceptable, as I don’t usually write such documents…

To be continued…

Side note

Now that I am sensing the end of the MSc is near, I am feeling pulled towards studying more of the concepts of Complexity. My personal library 📚 is steadily growing faster than I manage to read, so I am planning to try to catch up on  my reading during the summer months.

And soon maybe I’ll start coding new experiments 🧫, out of what I read, and hopefully with applications to Cybersecurity.

One can hope 😌
